We opened the Barnstaple Centre in September 2015 and by Spring 2016 we had moved into a light industrial unit on the Whiddon Valley Industrial Estate which had been redeveloped to give us a bigger space. We are on the edge of Barnstaple but with easy access to the town and to lots of businesses for work experience opportunities.
Our main building consists of classrooms for 1:1 or small group work, a sensory Thrive room to support emotional regulation, a kitchen, a woodwork workshop and a mechanics workshop. An outside space and an outbuilding will be developed in the future. We also have a small site on the other side of town with classrooms and a kitchen for students who need a very quiet space to learn in or who find interaction with peers especially challenging.
The STAFF AND SUBJECT AREAS
The team is made up of of the Head of Centre, five teachers (one of whom is a qualified Thrive practitioner), a SENCO and ten education/intervention support workers.
Our students each have a personalised curriculum designed specifically for them. They study at a variety of levels from Early Years to GCSE. We offer courses leading to GCSE English and Maths, plus Level 1, 2 or Entry Level qualifications in ICT, Science, Personal and Social Development, Plant and Animal Care, Art and Photography, Child Care, Woodwork, Car Maintenance, Preparing for Work and MFL. We work with the local FE College to support students to access Construction courses there. Every student has an individual Thrive programme and timetabled Thrive sessions to support their emotional development.
